In Every Window — a Day
In Every Corner — a Story
There are places that don’t just welcome you — they almost adopt you. That’s how Hotel Palace in Băile Govora feels: not just a building that hosts guests, but a home for stories. We came here for health, hand in hand with our little ones.
Romania is home not only to storybook landscapes, but also to people who put heart and soul into everything they do. I believe it’s time we pay closer attention to what is ours and promote not only natural or historical beauty, but also those places where someone works with care to offer true quality.
Too often, we’ve gotten used to being harsh with our own — to criticize without understanding, to demand perfection without offering support. But Romania and the Romanians who stay, who build day by day, deserve more than snap judgments. They deserve trust. They deserve the chance to be seen, heard, and appreciated.
This isn’t about being biased or ignoring what’s not working. On the contrary — it’s about offering respectful feedback, recognizing effort and progress, and learning to value each other more. Because “home” isn’t just where we’re born — it’s how we treat one another.
When planning a family vacation, choosing the right destination often turns into a marathon. I look for places that are truly child-friendly — not just in vague descriptions, but in every little detail that makes the difference between just another stay and a memorable experience. Most of the time, it takes me about a month to piece everything together: picking the destination, finding the right hotel, reading dozens of reviews, assessing our needs, and requesting personalized offers.
This annual experience motivated me to create a dedicated section on my blog for parents like me. There, I share honest stories about the places we’ve visited, the people we’ve met, and how much our kids enjoyed it. I write with detail, sincerity, and heart — because I know how hard it is to find real, useful information when you’re planning moments that matter.
Without exaggeration, I want to share our full experience at Hotel Palace, Băile Govora, exactly as it happened.
Our opinion on room amenities, style, and other essentials for a family of four
As a family of four, we booked an apartment. It included a hallway, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. Ours also had a balcony. In the living room, we had an extendable sofa, armchair, desk, wardrobe with a mini-fridge, and a safe. The bedroom had a double bed, vanity table, and TV. The cable subscription offered a wide range of channels, so we had no issues with the kids’ preferences. Naturally, the hotel offers high-speed internet, free of charge.
The bathroom is impressive — spacious, with a large soaking tub and extremely clean. I especially liked the refillable dispensers for shower gel and shampoo. The toiletries are excellent quality. As a mom, I was happy with the cleanliness and fresh smell.
How is the restaurant, menu, and dining experience at Hotel Palace, Govora?
As you can see in the photos, the restaurant is spacious — like the rest of the hotel. It offers high chairs for children, and the waitstaff are quick, professional, pleasant, and attentive even to the little ones. There’s also a large, beautiful terrace where you can eat either in the open or under cover. We enjoyed having our coffee and a sweet treat there.
The breakfast is a buffet with cold platters, hot dishes, cereals (including kid-friendly options), milk, yogurt, juices, coffee, tea, and sweets. We skipped lunch because our kids wake up late and don’t eat right away. We opted for à la carte dinner and were satisfied. You may find negative reviews about the price or portion sizes (some say they’re small). Neither bothered us, especially since the food quality was excellent. It all depends on your expectations. Sure, you could drive 20 minutes to Râmnicu Vâlcea and get a bucket of fried food or salads for the same money — enough for four. But we chose à la carte dinner because we also liked leaving the resort occasionally.
You should evaluate the restaurant in the context of its goals. This is a spa resort, and most people come for treatments that last at least five days. In that case, an all-inclusive package makes more sense. That’s why the menu isn’t exhaustive — though they do have desserts, including in a pastry display. We appreciated the dedicated kids’ menu — it came in handy.
On the other hand, opinions vary based on dietary habits. If you pile your plate with everything on the first day, it’s only natural to feel like there aren’t enough options later.
On the other hand, opinions vary based on dietary habits. If you pile your plate with everything on the first day, it’s only natural to feel like there aren’t enough options later. We, for instance, value food that is fresh, properly cooked, and doesn’t rely on seasoning to cover up poor quality — and we were more than satisfied. On days when we wanted to eat more, we simply added a soup or dessert to the main dish.
Also, if you stay longer than a few days, don’t hesitate to talk to the chef or restaurant manager. It’s easy to assume things, but it’s much more effective to communicate your preferences with warmth. The hotel staff are open and appreciate feedback when it’s delivered respectfully.
What activities are available for children or families with kids at hotel Palace, Băile Govora?
The resort offers a children’s playroom and a beautifully arranged outdoor play area in the park right behind the hotel. The space is shaded, safe, and well-maintained.
For indoor fun, there’s also a game room for all ages (chess, table tennis, board games, even a PlayStation). You can ask for the key at the reception. If you travel in a larger group or have older children, this room can be a fantastic alternative to screen time.
Of course, the real highlight of Govora is its air — and the best activity for any family is simply walking outdoors. You have dozens of options and trails, and the area is extremely clean. We walked daily with the kids, stopping for photos, or to explore the spa park and surroundings. There are several cozy spots nearby, including a beautiful cafe and a charming local pastry shop.
Hotel Palace, Băile Govora **** – an architectural masterpiece with remarkable innovations
Built between 1911 and 1914 based on the plans of French architect Ernest Doneaud, Hotel Palace is a striking example of eclectic architecture, blending styles such as Art Nouveau, Rococo, Baroque, Classical, and Renaissance, with Neo-Romanian influences.
The hotel features 365 openings (doors and windows), symbolizing the number of days in a year. The building was designed so that the sun could be seen from every room each day of the year, which is why people say: „In Govora, the sun is rented by the hour.”
Hotel Palace was the first hotel in Romania with its own treatment facility. Its architect, Ernest Doneaud, seemed to compose a stone and stained-glass symphony, in a style that merges Art Nouveau with Neo-Romanian elements. They say it has 365 openings — a door or window for each day of the year. A living calendar, in which we’ve begun to rewrite our own balance.
Few people know that this gem rests on a lead plate placed on spherical bearings — a seismic innovation of its time. Or that the interior walls are made of cork to lighten the structure. Or that a royal library once operated here. Today, something even rarer functions here: a pause.
Unique details about Hotel Palace, Băile Govora
A cultural center under royal patronage
Within the hotel operated the first library in Băile Govora, under the patronage of the Royal House, as a branch of the „Romanian Cultural League.” It was active until 1947, contributing to the cultural life of the resort.
A twin brother in Switzerland
Hotel Palace has a “twin brother” in the resort of Gstaad, Switzerland, built following a similar concept, reflecting the international influences of early 20th-century spa architecture and tourism.
Restoration and modern recognition
Between 2010 and 2013, the hotel was restored with European funding, in a rehabilitation project that lasted 42 months and had a total value of 17,700,924.28 lei. Today, Hotel Palace is a restored historical monument, offering its guests a blend of historical refinement and modern amenities.
What other opinions and reviews will you find online about Hotel Palace, Băile Govora?
I checked the reviews available online, both on Google and on specialized platforms. There are quite a few negative reviews. From my perspective, these do not reflect the current reality. I mean no offense to either past or future guests, which is why I suspect that some of the negative feedback stems from the pandemic and post-pandemic period. Let’s not forget that many businesses were on the brink of closure, while others were seriously affected in terms of revenue and workforce availability.
Some guests most likely expected different amenities in terms of furniture, given the building’s history and its architectural value — it’s a masterpiece. However, I understand the current design choices, which align with the historic and architectural style of the hotel. From the standpoint of acquisition and maintenance costs, the choices made in 2013 were appropriate. They took into account the high wear and tear of the facilities, as well as the fact that this is primarily a treatment center for families with children.
Perhaps in the future, the guest room furniture will be upgraded to solid wood pieces. Until then, I hope that Romanian guests will also become more mindful when it comes to taking care of the items in a hotel — I’ve noticed quite a few incidents of misuse.
